Most children have mild COVID-19 disease, but infection is common and they may spread the disease to others in the household. Allergic reactions are rare. The COVID vaccine has been available for children 12 – 15 years old with chronic diseases of the lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, gut, nervous system, endocrine and immune disorders but the JCVI has recently announced that vulnerable 5 to 11 year olds can also be given an age appropriate dose of Pfizer-bioNTech COVID-19 vaccine with an interval of eight weeks between 1st and 2nd doses. Only children with previous reactions to the vaccine need to be referred to an allergist.
