Is it milk allergy?
Were there symptoms of acute allergy (urticaria, angioedema, asthma, coughing, faintness) within 30 – 60 min of consuming dairy products?
AND/OR
Were there symptoms of delayed allergy (flares of eczema, bloody diarrhoea, colic, vomiting) within a few days of consuming the dairy products which lasted for up to a week after stopping the food?
Educate the family about milk allergy (refer to our milk allergy information leaflet)
Provide an allergy management plan
Avoid all dairy products that cause the reaction, as well as sheep and goat milk (NB children may tolerate baked milk in biscuits)
Commence extensively hydrolysed cow’s milk formula (or in children over 6 months consider soya)
Refer to a local community dietitian
RED FLAGS needing referral to a health care professional experienced in looking after children with severe food allergy if
SYMPTOMS OF ANAPHYLAXIS
NOT TOLERATING EXTENSIVELY HYDROLYSED FORMULA AND REQUIRING AMINO ACID FORMULA
SYMPTOMS EVEN WITH EXCLUSIVE BREAST FEEDING
MULTIPLE FOOD ALLERGIES OR SEVERE ATOPIC DISEASE
FAILURE TO THRIVE
